Detailed
Description
Back in October of 2004 I
met with Alan, an extremely nice gentleman who was interested in a 66 Convertible
I was helping a customer sell. After showing him the car and talking
a little about what he was looking for we decided this particular vehicle
was probably not the right match. Alan was in the market for a classic
original, unmolested early Mustang convertible that could be driven on
weekends and enjoyed. Not a trailer queen but a show level occasional
driver.
By coincidence another customer
had told me a month earlier of an interesting convertible he had seen down
near his home in Ft Walton Beach, Florida. His ice cream delivery
man had seen the car while on his rounds and mentioned that it was for
sale. Shortly thereafter I made a trip down to Blue Water Bay, Florida
to meet with the owner and check out this vehicle.
I was not disappointed, what
I found was a true one owner Mustang still in regular driver status.
The car was completely original and had been well maintained. I could
find no more than a pin head of rust on the car and it was the only one
I had ever seen with this color combination. I wanted to buy the
vehicle but the owner knew its value and was not parting with it for anything
less than that number. Turns out she had taken delivery of the vehicle
in Orlando, Florida in early 1966 and over the course of the ensuing 40
years the car had been with her all around the country as far as Oregon
and ultimately back to north Florida.
Unfortunately she was now
confined to a wheel chair and unable to drive her Pony any longer.
In fact she really needed top dollar for the vehicle in order to replace
it with a wheel chair capable van. Knowing this car was quite special
I told her I would do my best to help find the right buyer. Sensing
a possible match of needs I told Alan about the car and showed him the
pictures I had taken while visiting a month earlier.
Alan was sufficiently interested
to schedule time for he and his wife to make the six hour trip south where
I would meet them along with my trailer in case a deal was made.
I also loaded a pneumatic jack, vehicle stands, flashlights and creeper
so we could thoroughly inspect the underside of the car on site (of course
we made the appropriate pre-arrangements with the owner first). The car
checked out like a champion and the trip was worthwhile.
Alan and his wife Mary Grace
made a deal with the owner and both parties were elated they had been able
to help each other. I loaded the vehicle and transported it back
to our shop in Atlanta where we went over the vehicle in detail and gave
it a check up before delivering to its new owners. Alan and Mary
Grace enjoyed the vehicle for the rest of the summer then in late fall
brought it back to us for a light but full restoration back to its original
glory.
We took the car down to metal
and did a full repaint, detailed the engine and compartment, replaced the
convertible top complete with rear folding glass window, steam cleaned
the underside and replaced the carpet. The console had a small crack
that needed repair, the front seats were re-upholstered, and the interior
metal was completely repainted. When completed the car was a true
show-level driver that the owners have since enjoyed and generally spoiled
rotten!
Recently Alan and Mary Grace
have moved to their retirement home in Sky Valley, Georgia and regrettably
do not have the appropriate enclosed area for garaging this ultra nice
Pony. Alan called and said despite his love for the vehicle he could
not in good conscience leave it outside in the weather and would rather
give it up than see it suffer as a result.
Before they moved we placed
the vehicle in our showroom and now we are again looking for the appropriate
new owner. This vehicle is in absolutely gorgeous condition, runs
and drives like new and needs nothing but the right owner to lavish
it with attention.
Since production figures for ’65 and ’66 are very limited we don't know
exactly how rare this color combination is but do know we've never seen
another quite like it.
The Ivy Gold and White interior
is quite stunning paired with the Raven Black exterior and White Top and
will bring attention no matter what else is in the same corral. Please
do not hesitate to call or email with questions, we will be happy to spend
the necessary time with you if you are seriously interested in this beautiful
and collectible Mustang.
