The tired 289 2V was to be removed and stored in favor of a 351W.
Note the aftermarket flex fan.  We think the original somehow launched itself into the driver side of the engine compartment where there was an ugly slash.  Also note the holes ripped out where the hinges used to be.  That will be fun to fix!  Same on the other side.
Bird's eye view of the engine compartment for future reference purposes prior to engine removal.
This 289 will see life again in another project, but will be pushing far more horsepower in it's next reincarnation.  For now it is being retired.
Predictably, the battery acid had eaten away substantial portions of sheet metal.

The automatic tranny had been slipping badly.  No matter since this project includes adding a five speed Tremec 3550.
UMMH!  More daylight than metal!
The whole back end was toast.
The fuel tank was removed, drained and disposed of.
Well, there is some metal left, beneath the rear seal.

The photographs above illustrate the severity of the rust damage.  The only thing keeping the elements out was the carpet.  Some of the worst floor pan damage I've seen.  Tim remarked, if you laid on the ground and looked up through the floor pans it was like a starry, starry night!
After all parts had been removed the "Patient" was completely media stripped, inside, outside and underneath.  I didn't spend the money to strip the rear quarters since we knew they already were too far gone.  The remaining metal got a quick coating od DP 40.
Now we started cutting away the unusable pieces.  Now it became obvious that the inner wheel wells and portions of the frame rails were going to require replacement.  This was when I really began to worry about what I had got myself into!
